What are the symptoms and causes of brittle nails and can a nail become dry?
Although nails are hard and seem dry naturally, they are not, so yes they can become dry. Nails become dry and brittle for a number of reasons that can consist of frequently washing your hands or doing the dishes without hand protection, cold weather can dry out nails and cause them to become brittle, Having false nails or polishing them on a continuous basis or just normal symptoms of age.
If you do have brittle nails you may notice that they are weak, splitting or peeling. These symptoms would stop any treatments that you are booked in for however oils can be applied to try and help cure the symptoms.
Please note that nails can be dry and not brittle and they can be brittle and not dry.
To help prevent dry and brittle nails from progressing you could do the following:
- Use dedicated nail oils
- Use moisturiser
- Cut back on moisturiser (for brittle and moist nails)
- limit nail manicures
- Wear gloves for tasks (washing up, gardening, using chemicals etc.)
- Avoid alcohol based wipes and gels inc. Hand sanitizers
